How Much Does It Cost to Install a Wind Turbine?

Wind turbines are used to produce energy using the wind and the rotary device comes in an array of shapes and sizes. In an effort to conserve other methods of energy, some people have embraced the notion of using wind power. However, the cost to install a wind turbine can sometimes overshadow the anticipated benefits.

 Wind Turbine Installation Cost

The total cost of installing a commercial-scale wind turbine will vary depending on a variety of factors, including the cost of financing, construction contracts, type of machine, and location. In 2007, such projects ranged from $1.2 million to $2.6 million [1]. Today, the majority of commercial-scale wind turbine installations cost around $3.5 million.

According to the California Energy Commission, residential wind turbine installation involving a 10 kilowatt home wind system costs approximately $25,000 to $35,000 [2]. Generally, a turbine of this size is constructed on a 1-acre lot with a tower that measures about 100 feet tall.

Independent farmers interested in the installation of a wind turbine will face varying costs due to size, generating capacity, fees, service agreements, installation, equipment, tower type and height. The average cost is more than $15,000. A few examples with installation costs include [3]:

  • Southwest Windpower Skystream (3.7: 1.8 kW rated output, 40 ft. guyed tilt-down tower): $16,000 to $18,000
  • Abundant Renewable Energy ARE (110: 2.5 kW rated output, 40 ft. guyed tilt-down tower): $24,000
  • Bergey Excel 10 kW (10 kW rated output, 60’ fixed lattice tower): $64,000
