How Much Does a Car Weigh?

When it comes to figuring out how much a car weighs, the make, model and year of the vehicle will play an important role. Many people are interested in the weight of their car because it also determines the maximum weight capacities for towing and transporting items. When cars are made, the gross vehicle weight and the gross vehicle weight rating are disclosed. Both of these measurements are listed on the certificate of origin or title, and on the vehicle’s invoice.

The average weight of a car in the United States is:

  • 3,000 to 4,500 pounds for compact cars
  • 4,500 to 5,500 pounds for mid-size cars and sedans
  • 5,000 to 7,000 pounds for light trucks, minivans, and SUVs
  • 7,500 to 12,000 pounds for larger pick-up trucks
